Lisa Marie Garbo, Ancestor of Greta, Advocate for Anti-Size Discrimination
Long Beach, CA (April 16, 2009) She is the voice of America’s plus-sized population, a movement quickly gaining momentum in America today. POWER PLUS WOMAN, Lisa Marie Garbo, plus-sized role model and advocate speaks out on behalf of a suppressed subculture of men and women who have been without a voice, but who intend to be heard. The message is out universally about size acceptance, anti-size discrimination and equal rights for plus-sized people.
Garbo is the owner and founder of Club Bounce, an upscale size-positive nightclub for plus-sized men and women located in Long Beach, and soon in Hollywood, CA and Phoenix, AZ. Here the overweight can dance freely, socialize and bond with each other without being judged or scrutinized.
Because of her tremendously successful nightclubs, and her appearances on television shows such as Dr. Phil and the Secret Lives of Women, Garbo has long been an inspiration to thousands of overweight individuals in America. However, the incident that personally changed her life occurred one evening at Area Night Club, a posh West Hollywood, California nightspot, when she and her girlfriend were shunned and refused admittance because of their oversized figures. Snickering voices followed by laughter and finger pointing was an only-too-familiar scenario for a courageous and active woman relentlessly facing a life filled with discrimination and humiliation. Her only choice was to make it her life’s mission that all fat people are and should be created equal.
Federal and state laws declare that all persons within the United States are free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and yet with the exception of Michigan, there is not a law that pertains to size discrimination. It is Garbo’s objective to see that all overweight people be shown the exact same rights as their size-acceptable counterparts.
Power Plus Woman, Lisa Marie is dedicated to spreading the word that size-discrimination in our society leaves a lasting, negative effect on everyone. Just as the gay population was at one time discriminated against, overweight people continue to be disregarded and victimized daily. Garbo says, “With all the changes within our political and social culture, the timing for size-acceptance could not be more perfect than right now.”
The bar is now officially raised. Accommodations for plus-sized bodies are some of the first changes Garbo envisions. Laws prohibiting obesity discrimination must be put into place by our legislators. From larger passenger seating on our airlines, to larger booths in restaurants - true social acceptance of the plus-sized population means that accommodations must be made-to-fit.
Unlike her ancestor, Greta Garbo, known for her famous statement “I want to be left alone,” Lisa Marie Garbo is encouraging others to join her on the path of size-acceptance for all plus-sized people.
