Toxins in your home
September 28th 2009 22:51
Have any of us ever and I mean ever thought of how the materials you buy for your home are processed? Do you ever think of the material on your bed or sofa - toxic? I know I have never thought of it until I read this article, “Toxic Sofas”. This article brings to life some really great points in our sofas, particularly. Some of the processing of the materials causes; severe burns, rashes, disorders of the brain and respiratory system, as well as some cancers.
This article brings to life that many of these toxins are from products generally produced overseas where the manufacturing laws are different that in the United States or United Kingdom. This particular article talks about the regulations of Britain. Here is a direct quote, “In order to pass British Standards test BS2543, for example, furniture is tested for fire and general safety, along with 12 other tests, including tests to determine where the material has been sourced from.”
I believe it is essential, being a consumer, that before you purchase anything for your home, that you must read this article to become an informed consumer. If you have children, the elderly, illnesses, or animals; you need to be an advocate for your family. To do this you must be informed of what you are purchasing. Also, pay attention to the purchases you made in the past. Are you or your loved ones suffering from a new health issue? If so, think back to see if you recently purchased something new. If you have, wash it or better yet, take it from your home for a period of time and see if the symptoms lighten. I am not saying that after damage is done that all you need to do is remove the item and all will be well. I am saying that if you remove the item, then the item will not be able to add more toxins to your home. You need to inform your doctor if you have a new onset of an illness, rash or burn; that you purchased something new for your home. There is another chemical that you need to watch out for is DMF, this chemical prevents mould during transportation. This chemical causes the following; rashes, burns and some kinds of cancer. Again, this chemical is added to the process from overseas manufacturers.
All in all, research the manufacturers you are interested in purchasing products. Inquire as to the manufacturer’s material processing and what kind of chemicals are used to build the whole product. Do not even dismiss the type of glue they use. It is very important to you and your family. Be an informed consumer.
